MSOE_rugby_braincancer_fundraiserHelp a local collegiate rugby team next Friday night, Oct. 7, raise donations and give back to a charity that helped a rugger in need.

The Milwaukee School of Engineering men's rugby club is hosting MSOE Tackles Brain Cancer next Friday at 8 p.m. at the home match against Northwestern University.

All proceeds from this event will go to Harley Helping Hands, an organization that provided support to former rugger Curtis Thomas when he suffered from the disease.

You can RSVP and receive more information via the MSOE Tackles Brain Cancer Facebook event page here.

The fundraising event and match will be held at MSOE's Viets Field, located at the intersection of N. Broadway St. and E. Knapp St. in Milwaukee.

Curtis Thomas' sister, Clare, shared this information about his diagnosis and experience with brain cancer:

On a Thursday evening in April 2011, Curtis went to the emergency room in Milwaukee after experiencing vision loss. His family in suburban Chicago drove to meet him and he returned home with them. Unbeknownst to them, he would not return to his life as a recent MSOE graduate working for Johnson Controls. The next day, he was admitted to the University of Illinois Hospital in order to determine the reason for his vision issues. After three weeks in the hospital and numerous tests, doctors diagnosed Curtis with brain cancer. His vision had deteriorated rapidly during this time and when he left the hospital, he was blind. Over the course of the next 15 months, he endured many rounds of chemotherapy, two rounds of radiation, two hospital stays, and countless doctor appointments. One year and three months after the diagnosis, Curtis died at home on August 27, 2012 at the age of 24.

Help a great cause and support a local rugby team!

Thanks to MSOE coach and WRFU officer Shannon Bustillos for sharing this.

Fans of the Wisconsin High School Girls Rugby League won't be surprised to hear that Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) and Catholic Memorial are the early favorites to win their respective divisions in this fall's competition.

But don't let that news stop you from taking a bigger look at the league this fall. New to the league last year, Pulaski's girls team is making a strong sophomore showing and sitting in second behind Catholic Memorial in the White Division.

Take a look at the Red Division and you'll see the Brookfield Bruisers in second place behind DSHA. The Bruisers continue to be a team building their competitive skills each new season and it's paying off.

There are still a few more weeks of competition until the state championship, so the WRFU is looking forward to see how the league continues to play out.

New this year is the return of high school girls rugby in Madison. The new Madtown Furies side - although less than 10 players so far - is combining with Vernon and Muskego to earn minutes on the pitch. The new players joined in this week's match against Oak Creek.
